Egyptian Amarna limestone ring with inscribed bezel

A rare limestone finger ring with an oval bezel and D-shaped profile. There are traces of lightly incised patterns on the shank flanking the bezel as well as faint incised designs on the bezel which may be a preliminary crude hieroglyphic inscription.

Egypt, XVIIIth Dynasty, probably Amarna and reign of Akhenaten, c. 1353-1336 BC

Condition
Repaired with minor chipping, the surface has worn to a glossy smooth patina

Provenance
Ex. private collection, Bergen, New Jersey, USA; acquired during the 1970’s from older collections, mostly from Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York. An ink collection number inside the shank: 46.40.115, and a further number on the side of the bezel: 311.
