A small carved serpentine cippus (magical stele) decorated with a figure of Horus surmounted by a Bes mask.
The back is carved with several lines of inscription below an indistinct design within a rectangular panel.
Egypt, Ptolemaic period, 332-30 BC
5.2 x 2.8 cms
Losses and wear as shown, the pale brown blob on the lower right has been removed (the remains of some old wax).
Ex. Collection: Gustave Mustaki, Alexandria, Egypt; acquired mid 20th Century and exported under license of the Egyptian government.
Mustaki was a prolific antiquities collector, pieces from his collection are held by several major museums including the British Museum and Getty Museum.
The items being offered by Helios Gallery have remained in the Mustaki family and are being sold for the first time since their acquisition in Egypt.
