Greek Athenian white ground lekythos, ex. Fitzwilliam Museum

G140

£750.00

Sold

A fine example of a large white ground pottery lekythos with black glazed palmette decoration on the reserved shoulder. The decoration which would once have been painted over the white ground body has largely been lost except for some scattered patches of drapery lines on the front of the vase.

Culture
Greek, Athens, early 5th Century BC

Size
26 x 8.1 cms

Condition
Repaired from fragments and a couple of small losses have been sensitively restored, professionally conserved in 1984 by laboratories at Cambridge, UK.

Provenance
Ex. private collection, Cambridge, UK, accompanied by a two-page scientific conservation report by the Institute of Archaeology (UCL, London University) dated 23/2/1984 stating the owner of the vase as the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. There are no museum accession numbers marked on the vase which would identify an acquisition date/provenance but the lekythos is consistent with a number of white ground lekythoi acquired by the museum in the 19th and early 20th Century.
