Cretan Hadra Ware hydria with dolphin decorationG16
A pottery Hadra Ware hydria painted with dolphins, floral swags and palmettes. These vases were produced specifically as cinerary urns for itinerant Cretans and the majority originate from Greek trading settlements in Egypt. Their decoration is typical of Greek designs and does not rely on the Egyptian pantheon for their inspiration, thus creating a purely Greek/Cretan container for the remains of a traveller destined not to return to their homeland.
Crete, c. 3rd Century BC (probably excavated in Egypt)
35.5 x 23 cms including handles
Repaired from numerous fragments with losses, surface wear and areas of old painted plaster restoration, both handles restored and rear handle missing. Around 90% of the original vase is present.
Ex. deceased estate, Nice, Fance; collection acquired 1950’s – 1960’s.
