A black glazed pottery guttus or feeder vessel with a lion’s head spout as well as a further raised spout on the top.
Greek, South Italian colony of Metapontum, 4th Century BC
Repaired from large fragments with losses as seen in the photographs
7 x 7.4 cms
Ex. collection: Maurice Fallies, France (1883-1965) and thence by family descent. Fallies was an artist active in the early to mid 20th Century and known mostly for his paintings of Paris street scenes. The base of the vessel is inscribed “Metaponte”, Metapontum was an important Greek colony on the foot of Italy.
