Greek Attic black figure wine kylix with panther decoration

Sold

A large black figure pottery kylix cup with a stemmed foot and two handles. The exterior of the bowl is painted with a pair of confronting panthers on both sides which are flanked by palmettes next to the handles. The tondo is undecorated apart from an apotropaic eye in form of concentric circles.

The kylix was used for drinking wine at symposia and the panther decoration links to Dionysos, the god of wine and merriment.
