Greek large red figure vase fragment with courting couple and Eros
G30£800.00
Sold
Fragments from a large red figure pottery vase decorated with a presentation scene. The scene depicts a seated maiden wearing jewellery and a peplos dress, before her stands a naked youth offering her the contents of an open box held in his left hand. Above these two figures is another naked youth, this time wearing jewellery on his legs indicating him as the god Eros.
Eros was the god of love and desire, his presence indicates that the figures are a courting couple and this is further emphasised by their eyes which meet each others’ gaze above the gift being presented.
