Roman pewter bowl with incised turned decoration

Sold

A pewter bowl with a raised foot, curved profile and flanged rim. Both the interior and exterior of the bowl are decorated with incised bands as well as concentric circles to the tondo.

Pewter vessels were widely used as tableware in ancient Roman homes, particularly in the British Isles where tin mining was an important industry. However, excavated pewter vessels are quite rare in comparison to pottery vessels as the metal would have been melted and re-used if the object ceased to be of use.
