Greek Apulian large red figure pottery pyxis

G55

£900.00

Sold

A red figure pottery cylindrical pyxis jar with a painted disc lid. The lid is decorated with a female head in profile highlighted with pink and white hair ornaments and jewellery.

A pyxis of this larger size is unusual, these vessels were uniquely feminine and very personal, being used by women for the storage of cosmetics, jewellery and trinkets.

Culture
Greek, South Italian colonies, Apulian, 4th Century BC

Size
6 x 12.2 cms

Condition
Intact with light surface chipping. A hole was drilled to the centre of the lid in modern times, presumably for the addition of a small finial/handle allowing practical use.

Provenance
Ex. deceased estate, Suffolk, UK; acquired from Charles Ede Ltd on 21st November 2012 (their receipt included with the pyxis). Formerly in a private collection, London, UK; acquired before 1970.
