A fine oval garnet intaglio seal decorated with a profile portrait, possibly a king. He is depicted with a large beard, long flowing hair and wearing a large globular earring and buttoned tunic.

Sassanian, 4th or 5th Century AD
Size
Seal: 1.2 x 0.9 cms, ring: UK size L, US size 6, circa 16.5 mm internal diameter.
Condition
Intact as shown, mounted in a 19th Century gold ring. There are two indistinct hallmarks on the outside of the ring, probably too worn to identify.
Provenance
Ex. collection (by repute): The Dukes of Argyll, Argyllshire, Scotland. Acquired in the 19th Century.
Supplied with a 19th Century leather ring box.
