Roman Sidonian white glass Temple Series vase with wine vessels

A Sidonian opaque white glass flask with very fine mould-blown decoration around the body. The decoration consists of a continuous frieze of architectural arches supported by columns above garlands swags. Inside the columns each field is decorated with a wine-related vessel including jugs, kraters and amphorae.
This type of decorated flask is thought have been produced in the vicinity of Sidon (modern Lebanon) and the wine vessel decoration is sometimes referenced as the “Temple Series” as the wine vessels are similar to ritual vessels used in temples of this period.

Intact with thin surface accretions and iridescent pitting
Provenance
Ex. deceased estate, Maidenhead, Berkshire, UK; acquired 1960’s-1970’s. Possibly acquired with other antiquities purchased in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv in May, 1970. The base with yellow painted collection number 187 and a black ink collection number B18.
