Roman or Parthian large gold amphora earrings

A pair of large and fine gold earrings in the form of wine amphorae. The earrings are formed with three lines of hollow gold balls attached to intricate rope-work straps rising to scrolling and filligree mounted arched handles at the top. The base of both earrings is mounted with a single Roman blue glass bead within a flat claw aperture.

6.3 x 1.1 cms, 8.2 cms including modern earring hoops

Condition
The earrings are intact as shown: there is ancient denting to the hollow ball decoration and the two glass beads are Roman but later replacements. Mounted with modern and fully wearable earring hoops and supplied with a custom-made mid 20th Century silk velvet display stand.

Provenance
Ex. estate of the Medieval historian and collector Dr Alexandre Brunet, Angers, France (d. 2022). Formerly in a mid 20th Century collection.
