Anatolian Chalcolithic clay steatopygous female figurine
W79£850.00
Available
A modelled clay figurine depicting a seated steatopygous woman with pointed legs and stump arms, the surface is undecorated except for two incisions to form eyes.
Unlike the better known seated figures of Tel Halaf, similar fertility figurines were also produced in Central Anatolia with a much wider and often more abstract repertoire of shapes. The broad hips indicate the female form and it is therefore presumed that these figures were associated with childbirth and fertility.
