Provenance
Ex. collection: Doris Gottlieb Brickner (1921-2021) and Dr. Manuel Gottlieb (1909-1972), New York, USA; with Stair Gallery, 7th April, 2022. Possibly from the Cesnola Collection of Cypriot Art via the Anderson Galleries disposal of surplus collections from the Metropolitan Museum NY during the 1920’s.

Dr Manuel Gottlieb was already collecting antiquities in New York by the 1940’s, a time when Cesnola antiquities were still in plentiful supply on the US art market. The two bowls we now offer for sale were acquired with a Frankish glass vessel which may have originated from the Julien Greau collection which was also partially dispersed by the Metropolitan Museum at the same sales as the Cesnola collection.

Several cast-glass bowls from the Met’s Cesnola collection were sold by Anderson Galleries in group lots but unfortunately no images of the bowls were published in their catalogue, making subsequent identification very difficult. The Metropolitan Museum retained one bowl from the group and their example is very similar to ours in terms not only of production, size and decoration but also subsequent collection patina.
