Available

A striking fragment from a large white marble relief carved with the profile head of a heroic male figure. The prominent Scopian brow, broad strong nose and flowing hair are influenced by depictions of Alexander the Great

The sculpture is finely carved and includes careful detailing such as under-cutting between the locks of hair. The large scale of the fragment suggests that it was part of an important public building rather than a sarcophagus or stele.

Roman, 1st or 2nd Century AD

21.8 x 15.7 cms

 Condition
Fragment as shown, traces of antique cement on the edges indicate an 18th or 19th Century mounting into a wall

Provenance
Formerly in a 19th Century French collection and discovered by the former owner in a provincial flea market. The back of the fragment was fitted in the early 20th Century with an iron mount and suspension ring for wall display.
