Acheulean chert hand-axe from Charente, France

A pale brown chert hand-axe with a broad rounded butt and pointed tip. Reputedly found at Saint-Même-les-Carrières (Charente), France, where excavation of gravel pits revealed numerous axes and other stone tools until they were closed in the 1970’s.

Palaeolithic, Acheulean, c. 300,000 – 170,000 BC
Condition
One side of the point is chipped revealing brown stone beneath the cream surface

12.4 x 8.1 cms
Provenance
Ex. deceased estate, Mons, Belgium; collection acquired mid to late 20th Century. Ink inscription on one side “ST MEME CHARENTE B. LANCEOTE ACHEULEEN SUR”

Egyptian sandals
